Umrah Visa Requirements

Umrah is a non-mandatory Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia that can be performed at any time of the year. It is also known as the “minor pilgrimage” in contrast to the Hajj, which is the “major pilgrimage” that is mandatory for all Muslims at least once in their lifetime.

To perform the Umrah, Muslims need to obtain an Umrah visa, which is a special type of visa issued by the Saudi Arabian government. The requirements for an Umrah visa vary depending on the applicant’s nationality, but generally, the following documents are needed:

  • A valid passport with at least six months remaining before expiry
  • A recent passport-size photograph
  • A confirmed booking for accommodation in Mecca or Medina
  • A confirmed round-trip airfare
  • A letter of sponsorship or invitation from a Saudi sponsor or a Saudi travel agency

Additionally, some countries may require additional documents such as a valid visa for a third country, proof of financial means, or a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate.

Once the visa is approved, the applicant will receive a confirmation letter that must be presented upon arrival in Saudi Arabia. Visitors must also undergo a medical examination upon arrival, and women over the age of 45 and children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a mahram (a male guardian).

It is important to note that the Umrah visa is valid only for a specific period of time, usually 15-30 days, and that the visa holder must leave the country before the visa expires.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of Muslims performing Umrah, with many taking advantage of the opportunity to perform the pilgrimage at any time of the year. The Saudi government has made it easier for Muslims to obtain an Umrah visa, and the process has become more streamlined and efficient.

The Umrah is a spiritual journey that offers Muslims the opportunity to connect with their faith and seek blessings from Allah. The Saudi government’s efforts to make the process of obtaining an Umrah visa easier has made it more accessible for Muslims from around the world to fulfill their desire to perform the pilgrimage.
